Christmas is the holiday season when we all hear it’s ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ and New Year’s is the time we make resolutions for change. The cards, carols and the parties all remind us that the Christmas and New Year’s holiday season is a time for families, friends and new beginnings.
In everyone’s life at some time your circumstances may change and you find yourself facing Christmas and the holiday season alone, making December the longest month of the year. All of us at one time or another face the holidays when the traditions we have so long kept are just no longer possible. It is not realistic to try hibernating for the month, adapting a Scrooge or “Bah humbug” attitude so change is inevitable.
We cannot turn the clock of time back but we can move forward and look for new and exciting ways to celebrate. If someone is missing from the celebrations this year for any number of reasons then maybe this is a good time to forego traditions of the past and create new ones. Marilyn Monroe once said, “Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.”
Reorganizing your holiday season may involve other family and friends but the secret is to find the one that’s right for you.
• Be open to new ideas and invitations
• Change up the traditional decorations
• Create an event around a meal or experience with others that are alone for Christmas or New Years. Too often we think we are the only one in a situation
• Take a holiday
